Wither
Hersey has two secrets. The first is that "he" is annoyed by anything rotten, lifeless, or withering. However, it's not that "he" hates these things. Rather, "he" fears them: "He" fears that, one day, "he" too will join their ranks. The withering paleness of death is a constant reminder to "him" of loss.
To stave off this fear, Hersey often bathes in the sun by "himself" when "he" doesn't have any missions. The bright sunlight envelops "him", giving "him" a sense of warmth, like a familiar hug... If "he" could, "he" would willingly drown in this temporary and illusory warmth.
